About Us
Our History
In 1931, the doors of a revolutionary new social service agency
opened in Beaumont for the first time. The Family Welfare Bureau,
predecessor of Family Services of Southeast Texas, Inc., was founded by
a group of public-minded community leaders. Their goal was to provide
financial assistance and social services to needy families. Over the
many decades of uninterrupted service, Family Services’ objectives and
methodologies have changed, but its commitment to its mission of
strengthening families has remained constant.
Family Services has grown and changed with the twentieth century
itself. Upon the 1930’s definition of the government’s responsibility to
provide direct financial assistance, private charities turned to other
challenges. For Family Services this was the development of social
casework, including individual, marriage, family and group counseling.
By the end of the 1950’s, Family Services was providing high-quality,
non-medical professional counseling services to the community. By the
1970’s, Family services had identified another need in the community:
non-clinical support services for families. Accordingly, home-based
services and group support and education for families were provided. In
the late 1980’s, Family Services assumed responsibility for family
violence shelter services and began to provide group counseling for
batterers. In recent years, a comprehensive network of family violence
services has been developed to serve Southeast Texas. We have also
expanded our commitment to working families by developing employee
assistance programs for local business and industry.
The vision of a handful of leaders in 1931 has impacted thousands of
lives during Family Services’ years. Today the programs of Family
Services continue to support positive family values, respect the
changing role of the family and assist families and individuals to deal
with their problems. Today Family Services of Southeast Texas remains a
premier resource for families!
